After making use of some more advanced statistics I thought it would be a good idea to compile a page of Sabermetric resources for folks to start their own foray into the dark side. It’s something I’m still learning and have come to really enjoy, and I hope you won’t be scared off by the numbers and the formulae if you’re not so good with mathematics. I’m simply terrible at math and haven’t gone much further than College Algebra academically but I’ve managed to grasp some of the finer concepts employed within the Sabermetric community.
If you’re simply looking for an explanation of the multitude of acronyms that are used, I highly recommend The Hardball Times’ glossary of Sabermetric terms and acronyms.
Yahoo! Sports’ Alex Remington posted a series of articles breaking down specific statistics.
One of the more valuable resources for the purposes of my blog here would be FanGraphs glossary. I utilize FanGraphs more than any other website when it comes to the statistics I check and reference. This will also give you the best explanation I’ve seen of Win Value statistics and how one calculates stats like wRAA and how that calculates into WAR. I really like FanGraphs. Like, a whole lot.
There’s most certainly more and I will continue to link to new resources as we go along.
If you’re advanced beyond the basics of Sabermetrics and are looking at getting started on your own research, there’s a great couple articles written titled Building a Sabermetrician’s Workbench which will get you going with mySQL and teach you how to query the databases and get started.
